Swimming Pool Renovation Without Re-Tiling

A new tiled floor in a concrete swimming pool is expensive, time-consuming and – if the causes of the old tiling problem are not addressed – often short-lived. More and more Dutch and Belgian swimming pool operators are therefore consciously choosing a renovation without new tiling: the existing surface is levelled with epoxy mortar and finished with a professional 2-component coating.

The end result is a flat, seamless and hygienic swimming pool in any desired colour, with demonstrably lower maintenance costs and without the typical weak points – grout lines – that tiling always entails.

Why Re-tiling is Often Not Cost-Effective

New tiles in a public pool cost between €120 and €250 per m² including adhesive, grout, and labour. For an average municipal pool of 800 m², this amounts to an investment of €100,000 to €200,000 – excluding downtime.

Furthermore, you reintroduce all the weaknesses typical of tiling: grout lines that detach over time, sharp tile edges in case of damage, colour differences after local repairs, and annual maintenance to keep everything in order.

What the ACRATON® Dolphin Method Solves

With a coating renovation, the existing tiling is not removed, but blasted, roughened, and levelled with a 2-component epoxy mortar. The pool is then finished with two layers of ACRATON® Dolphin coating. What remains is a seamless finish in one of 8 official ACRATON® colours.

No more grout lines, no sharp edges, no tile repairs – and maintenance limited to regular chlorine treatment and periodic inspection.

Cost Advantage in Figures

For an average public pool, the total investment for an ACRATON® renovation is typically between 30% and 50% lower than that of a complete new tiled floor. In addition, lifetime maintenance costs are drastically lower – usually recouped within 4 years compared to the variable costs of the old tiling.

Final Result in 4 Weeks

The turnaround time for a typical renovation is 2 to 4 weeks: draining, blasting, repairing and levelling, applying coating in 2 layers, curing, and refilling. PoolFIX coordinates the entire process with a certified applicator and provides a project plan based on pool design and weather conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do the old tiles need to be removed?
No. Well-adhered tiles remain in place and are incorporated into the levelling layer. Only loose or heavily damaged tiles are removed or repaired beforehand.
How is cracking prevented from reoccurring?
The epoxy mortar adheres chemically to both concrete and old tile substrate and exhibits similar expansion behaviour. This way, thermal stress is distributed rather than concentrated on grout lines.
Can this method be used in a heated indoor pool?
Yes, provided the pool is completely empty and dry during curing (6 days at 20 °C under water cure). PoolFIX advises on a project-by-project basis.
Is the finish smooth or sufficiently slip-resistant?
Standard ACRATON® Dolphin has a semi-gloss finish. For stepless slip resistance, a textured topcoat can be applied to specific areas (steps, shallow edge).
How long does the coating last?
Under standard public pool usage, references consistently show a service life of 20–30 years, provided it is inspected annually and locally repaired as needed.
Do I get a warranty?
PoolFIX coordinates with the manufacturer Zandleven Coatings and the certified applicator. Warranty conditions are documented in writing for each project.
