Preventing Cuts and Abrasions from Swimming Pool Tiles

Foot injuries in tiled public swimming pools are an underestimated yet common incident. For a manager or operator, each case results in administration, potential liability, a disrupted guest experience, and in some cases, insurance claims. The cause almost always lies in sharp tile edges, rough grout, or glass shards from previously broken tiles.

For operators under high liability pressure – municipal pools, hospital pools, school pools, holiday parks – safety is non-negotiable. An ACRATON® Dolphin renovation offers a seamless, edgeless surface where the risk of cuts is reduced to virtually zero.

Which Incidents Are Typical?

Three scenarios are most common: 1) Minor cuts to the sole of the foot from sharp tile glaze edges after chlorine erosion. 2) Abrasions along the lower legs when swimming against the wall. 3) Deeper cuts from broken tiles (often near steps or edge zones with thermal stress).

The common denominator: sharp tile edges or breakages. None of these incidents can occur in a pool without tiles and grout.

What a Coating Means for Liability

Insurance companies typically assign a more favourable risk profile to a renovated pool with a certified coating. This can translate into lower premiums, higher coverage limits, or quicker acceptance during claim processing. PoolFIX can supply the relevant datasheets and compliance documents for your insurer upon request.

Combination with Anti-slip Where Necessary

Safety in swimming facilities requires both the removal of sharp edges and sufficient grip on tread and shallow zones. ACRATON® Dolphin can be provided with a textured topcoat in specific areas (steps, shallow end, gutter) that meets European anti-slip classification C or D, while the smoother finish elsewhere remains comfortable for swimmers.

Documentation for Inspections

For Public Health Service inspections, safety audits, and internal quality systems, PoolFIX standardly supplies a set of inspection documents: datasheet 2D26, MSDS for base and hardener, applicator certificate, and adhesion test report. This makes your pool audit-proof.

Frequently asked questions

How many cut incidents are there on average per year in a public pool?
Figures vary, but municipalities typically report 3–10 incidents per year per 100,000 visitors in older tiled pools. In coated pools, we see this drop to < 1 per 100,000.
Does this really lower my insurance premium?
Often yes, but the exact amount depends on your insurer. Ask PoolFIX for the relevant compliance documents for the application.
What about sharp grates or stair nosings?
PoolFIX advises including all sharp metal or hard transitions in the renovation – rounded or finished.
Does this also apply to the terrace around the pool?
Not outside the water basin – the coating is specific to swimming surfaces. For terrace renovation, we use other PoolFIX products.
Which anti-slip class do you advise?
Steps and shallow zone: class C or D according to DIN 51097. Deep water zones: standard finish is sufficient.
How do I document this for my ARBO system?
PoolFIX provides a specific ARBO appendix with the relevant standards and test documentation.
