Cracked swimming pool grout — repair or eliminate permanently?

Cracked grout is typically the first visible sign of ageing in a tiled swimming pool. What starts as hairline cracks develops within a few seasons into loose pieces of grout material, dark discolouration, and ultimately detached tiles. For operators, this is a recurring maintenance issue that is rarely addressed at its root.

On this page, we discuss the cause, existing repair techniques, and the consideration of transitioning to a finish without grout — the structural solution for those wishing to permanently resolve the tiling issue.

Why grout cracks

Grout mortar — usually cement-based, sometimes epoxy — has different expansion behaviour compared to tiles and concrete. With every seasonal or temperature change, microscopic stresses arise between the three materials. On the weakest link — usually the grout — this stress manifests as hairline cracks that widen year after year.

Existing repair techniques

Option 1: grind out existing grout and refill with epoxy grout mortar. Effective for 3–7 years but only addresses cause 1 (chemical degradation). Option 2: full grout renovation with flexible sealant. Short lifespan (~3 years) and cosmetically less appealing. Option 3: local removal of severely damaged areas and re-grouting. Temporary intervention.

None of these options address the three other fundamental causes (thermal expansion, frost, mechanical fatigue).

The structural solution — no grout

During an ACRATON® Dolphin renovation, all grout lines disappear into the epoxy levelling layer, and the pool finishes as one continuous surface. What isn't there cannot crack. This is the only approach that eliminates all four fundamental causes in a single intervention.

Cost comparison

Annual grout maintenance typically costs €1.50 to €4 per m² per year for a public pool. A one-off coating renovation — depending on the initial situation — ranges between €80 and €130 per m² as a single payment. The point at which renovation becomes financially more favourable than annual grout maintenance typically occurs in years 4 to 7.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace only the grout with epoxy grout mortar?
Yes, this extends the lifespan. However, the other causes (expansion, frost, mechanical fatigue) remain active. Renovation to a coating eliminates them all.
Do flexible sealant joints help?
Limited and cosmetically weak. Acceptable for a few years; then back to square one.
How many tiles are typically lost during grout renovation?
5–15% are lost during grinding and must be replaced or re-fitted — resulting in the known colour differences.
Does a coating also prevent grout lines below the water surface?
Completely. The pool is finished without grout everywhere — base, walls, steps, and gutter.
Does this also apply to designer pools with large tiles?
Yes. The larger the tile module, the fewer grout lines, but the remaining grout lines carry more thermal stress.
How long does the shutdown last?
2 to 4 weeks for the complete renovation. An interim solution with grout renovation typically takes 5–10 days but only solves one of the causes.
