A Completely Flat Swimming Pool Floor — Comfort, Hygiene, and Safety

The concept of a 'flat swimming pool floor' might seem self-evident, but in tiled pools, it is never truly the case: tiles are separated by grout lines, do not lie flat across slopes, and develop an uneven surface over time due to differential expansion. A continuously coated surface, however, is completely flat — and this has practical implications for comfort, hygiene, and safety.

On this page, we explain what a truly flat floor delivers and when you will most strongly feel its benefits.

Underfoot Comfort

A flat, jointless epoxy floor feels soft and continuous under bare feet — comparable to a high-quality sports floor. No grout lines pressing into the foot, no sharp edges after 15 years of use. For families, the elderly, and sensitive feet, this represents a spectacular improvement over an older tiled pool.

Ease of Cleaning

A cleaning robot or brush moves much more efficiently over a flat surface than over a tiled floor with grout lines. Our clients report 40–60 % less cleaning time after a renovation. For commercial operators, this means direct savings on labour hours or a higher cleaning frequency within the same timeframe.

Anti-slip Where Required

A flat floor does not have to be slippery. For stairs, shallow areas, or slopes, PoolFIX can apply a textured topcoat that meets anti-slip class C or D according to DIN 51097. This way, you combine comfort where possible with grip where needed.

A Visual Aesthetic Gain

Architecturally, a flat, continuous colour surface is often calmer and more luxurious than a tile grid. This is particularly effective in modern, minimalist wellness environments. For traditional pools where the tile pattern was part of the design, a combination (mosaic waterline + coated floor) can be a beautiful compromise.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't a flat floor slippery and dangerous?
Standard ACRATON® Dolphin offers sufficient grip for regular pools. In critical zones, a textured topcoat is applied.
What about depth markings?
These are integrated into the coating using Marker Yellow (2058) or Coral Red (2057) — more durable than stickers or painted tile lines.
Does an underwater vacuum cleaner work better?
Yes. A flat floor makes automatic cleaning robots more effective — no getting stuck in grout lines or edge transitions.
Do I lose decorative options?
For decorative patterns, a mosaic border or graphic element can be considered, but the floor itself gains in serenity and appeal.
Is this also suitable for older pools from the 1970s?
Precisely so — a complete renovation gives the pool a contemporary look without harming the original architecture.
Are the slopes retained?
Yes. The coating respects the existing pool design, including slopes, steps, and overflow channels.
