Epoxy Mortar for Swimming Pool Levelling

Before a coating like ACRATON® Dolphin can be applied to an old, tiled swimming pool, the substrate must be completely flat and free from tension. For this purpose, a 2-component epoxy mortar is used — a high-quality filling material that chemically bonds to both concrete and existing tile substrates.

On this page, we explain the technique, typical consumption figures per pool type, and the reasons why epoxy mortar is the only correct choice here — not cement, polyester, or polyurethane-bonded alternatives.

What is 2-Component Epoxy Mortar?

Epoxy mortar consists of a liquid epoxy base, a hardener, and coarse quartz aggregate. After mixing in the correct ratio (typically 1:1 base-to-hardener by volume, with 1–3 parts aggregate), a paste is formed that remains workable for 30–45 minutes and cures within 24 hours into a rock-hard, chemically resistant mass.

Unlike cement-based levelling compounds, epoxy does not undergo shrinkage cracks during curing, and the surface remains smooth. Unlike PU levelling compounds, epoxy is chlorine-resistant — a requirement for swimming pools.

On-site Procedure

1. Pool emptied, blasted, and dust-free. 2. Moisture measurement (max 4 % volumetric). 3. Check adhesion to tile substrate. 4. Mix in batches that can be processed within 30 minutes. 5. Apply with a levelling trowel and long screed bar on floors; with a hand trowel on walls and stairs. 6. Sand or grind after 24 hours of curing to remove sharp transitions. 7. Dust-free preparation for coating application.

Typical Consumption per Pool Type

For an average renovation with intact but uneven tiling, expect 4–7 kg/m² of mortar. For heavily damaged pools with voids and cracked tiles, this can increase to 10–15 kg/m². PoolFIX supplies epoxy mortar in 25 kg buckets and can provide an accurate quote based on photos and dimensions.

Why No Alternative Materials?

Cement-bound levelling compounds undergo shrinkage and are susceptible to chloride attack. Polyester fillers are UV-sensitive and, on average, 30 % less mechanically resilient. PU mortar can yellow under chlorine. Only 2-component epoxy combines chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and adhesion to mixed substrates.

Frequently asked questions

What layer thickness can be applied in one go?
Up to 8 mm in a single application. For thicker levelling, two applications are performed with 24 hours curing time in between.
Must all old grout be removed?
Hollow or loose grout, yes; sound cementitious grout may remain and will be incorporated into the levelling layer.
Is epoxy mortar safe for swimming pool water?
Yes, once fully cured — just like the ACRATON® Dolphin coating itself. Naturally, the pool must not contain water during curing.
Which hardener does PoolFIX use?
A specific epoxy hardener matched to the swimming pool segment. Datasheets are provided per project.
What is the drying time before coating?
Minimum 24 hours at 20 °C and 5 % hardener; for optimal adhesion, 48 hours is allowed before coating application.
Can I do this myself?
We advise using a professional applicator. Mixing ratios, processing time, and surface treatment require expertise.
