Most assemblies are assembled using bolts, nuts and screws. When these fasteners are the weakest link, they will fail prematurely. This specification explicitly prohibits the use of stainless steel 301/304/316/A2/A4/A5, Duplex/Super Duplex, and (hot-dip / electrolytically) galvanised steel. The contractor bears responsibility if a different material is chosen.

Stainless steel 301/304/316/A2/A4/A5, DUPLEX, SUPER DUPLEX and 1.4462 materials are not permitted in swimming pool atmospheres. Their use can lead to rejection, corrosion, falling parts, and liability.

A2 and A4 are considered corrosion-resistant materials in many general construction and installation applications. A swimming-pool hall, however, is an exceptional environment in which chloride load and tensile stresses can lead to stress corrosion cracking.

‘But it’s stainless steel, isn’t it?’ is not a material justification in a swimming pool.

Material safety in swimming-pool environments

Are you sure the right material has been applied in every location?

Do not use 1.4529 as a universal replacement for A2/A4 or other materials at arbitrary locations in a swimming-pool environment. Material selection must always fit within the official PoolFIX application guideline and the project-specific circumstances.

Even highly alloyed stainless steel is not entirely risk-free.

Stainless steel can fail in a swimming pool without warning.

The right question is: which material belongs in this specific location?

The displayed risk percentages are based on research by PoolFIX in collaboration with Koninklijke BAM, carried out for the municipality of Tilburg.

In the PoolFIX research, common stainless steel such as A2/304 and A4/316 showed very high susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking under the investigated swimming-pool conditions.

1.4529 HCR also proved not to be completely immune to stress corrosion cracking. That is why PoolFIX applies a limited application guideline for this material.
